The New York Knicks won't sign Allen Iverson, believing any short-term gain would hinder their plans to build for the future.  

Gani Lawal had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead No. 21 Georgia Tech to a 70-62 victory over George Mason on Friday in the consolation round of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Lawal scored six of his team's last 15 points as the Yellow Jackets (2-1) held off a late rally by the Patriots. Derrick Favors scored 18 points for Georgia Tech. He had six points in a 13-0 run that gave the Yellow Jackets a 43-23 lead with 15 minutes to play. The Patriots (2-2) did not get closer than six points  

The eighth-ranked Lady Bears (1-1) will finally come to play the No. 17 Cal Golden Bears (2-0) on Sunday. "We've been waiting for this game a really long time," Gray-Lawson said. And now there's an intriguing new dimension to the matchup: star Baylor freshman Brittney Griner and her attempts to dunk.

"This is the first time this year that we've played hard for 40 minutes," Tulane coach Dave Dickerson said. "We've been trying to preach to our team to play good, solid basketball. Kevin Sims really came through for us." Aaron Holmes led Tulane (1-2) with 17 points, while Kris Richard added 14.

Larry Bird and Magic Johnson will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend. They will be joined by some illustrious company. Bird and Magic have a pile of NBA championship rings between them and Johnson also has an NCAA title from his days at Michigan State.  

Northlake Christian School did some long distance dialing Tuesday night as the Wolverines canned nine 3-pointers en route to a 67-25 home victory over the Archbishop Hannan Hawks in the season opener for both clubs. NCS' Josh Seale connected on four treys in the fourth quarter finishing with 16 points and teammate Carter Fitzgerald also registered 16 points, hitting 6-of-7 free throws. Fitzgerald, who scored 12 of his points in the first half, missed the latter part of the game after suffering a broken

Mike Durham poured in 27 points Thursday night as Benton's Tigers rolled to a 79-73 basketball victory over the Class 5A Byrd Yellow Jackets. Durham was one of three Benton seniors who scored in double figures. Steven Vinson, who will also be playing football for the Tigers in tonight's playoff game at Cecelia, added 20 points and Kendall White added 14 points.  

Cope's seventh graders and Greenacres' eighth graders finished Bossier Parish Middle School League girls' basketball play with perfect records Thursday. The only thing left on the schedule will be the Lady Cougars Invitational Tournament at Cope after the Thanksgiving holiday break. Cope's seventh graders are 14-0 overall and 10-0 in league play after a 70-17 victory over Rusheon.  

At five-foot-ten and 150 pounds, the odds are stacked against Herb Magee on the basketball court. But as an orphan since the age of 13, the odds have been stacked against him most of his life. Yet the West Philly-born basketball maven persevered, becoming a legend both on and off the court in the process.
